Sponsor a SpayWe are often asked why we fight to fix as many community cats as we can every year. The answer is one that no one wants to hear. Right now over 100,000 cats are living on Winnipeg streets. This year they will produce 300,000 kittens -- that number is a statistical average (each intact adult cat produces approximately 3 kittens each year). Of those, a staggering 75% (225,000) will die. Around 10% of the survivors (approximately 7,500) will be ‘rescued’. The rest will live through the summer, and enter our bitterly cold winter. If they make it through the winter, they will join the breeding population, and repeat the cycle.
BUT: When we help people manage the cats in their neighbourhoods by providing TNR and other management services, the cycle ends and the numbers start to go down almost immediately. The cats that are fixed become healthier because they are not having to worry about mating or providing food for kittens. Nuisance behaviours stop. The horrid smell of territorial tom cats goes away. No more kittens die because no more kittens are born. It would be truly wonderful if we could fix thousands of community cats, all at once. That would make an immediate impact on the population in the entire city. Unfortunately, the number of cats we can help is limited by the amount of money we have. The math is simple: more money equals more cats helped. More money equals fewer dead kittens. This year we expect to spend about $50,000 on spay or neuter for community cats. Part of that will be covered by colony managers who are able to cover the cost of surgery and vaccination for the cats in the colonies they manage. The rest will come from individual donations and fundraising events. When you contribute to Sponsor a Spay you make a difference for cats and kittens living on our streets!
